Homemade Rugs That Any Homeowner Can Make – Part 2

With different colors, textures and patterns available, it can be pretty difficult to choose the right rug. But the good news is that instead of purchasing one, you can create and customize your own rug according to your tastes and needs.

#1. Customized Door Rug

Who doesn’t want a nice door rug with a great catchphrase?

Materials you will need:

  • Plain doormat
  • Spray paint in a light color
  • Small pieces of poster
  • Silhouette cameo
  • A 12×24 inch cutting mat or an x-acto knife and printe

Instructions to make a customized door rug:

Step 1: So first of all, if you are using a Silhouette Cameo, then you will need to trim your paper to fit. Now, when you setting your file to print in the Silhouette Studio, it is important to take into consideration the poster board.

Step 2: It is possible that the size of the word you want may not fit straight across on your poster board. So, after adjusting it to the size you want, rotate it until it fits onto the board. And please make sure you leave the last 2 inches of the mat unused since your poster board is not that long.

Step 3: After cutting and removing it, flip the whole thing over and peel the mat away from the poster board. And I recommend you not to go the other way as you might have a big curled-up mess on your hands for your stencil.

Step 4: Now if some of your words don’t fit on one piece of poster board, you can cut into two with some of the words on one board and the rest on the next. Then, trim around your words so that you can see your mat through all of the cut-out letters.

Step 5: Next, use spray adhesive to stick the stencils to the mat and use tape to secure the edges.

Step 6: Finish by putting the inside of the letters down by spraying a lot of adhesives and putting something with some weight on it such as a shoe or a can, to help them sit tight.

Step 7: Now, for the paint, it is up to you. You can choose your favorite color and spray it on the whole thing, including the uncovered edges.

Step 8: Allow it to dry completely and then remove the poster board away. And there you have your customized door rug ready!

Ever since I heard that friendship bracelets were back in trend, I couldn’t wait to make a friendship rug out of all those bright colors and patterns.

Materials you will need:

  • Two sets of 5 colors of fabric
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Tape

Instructions on how to make the Friendship Bracelet Chevron Rug:

Step 1: The first step includes lining the five colors upon how you would like them to appear in rows on the rug.

Step 2: Match the colors on the other side of the line so that there are ten pieces.

Step 3: With the first piece of fabric on the left, make the number 4 with the second piece.

Step 4: Then, place the first piece under the second piece and tie it, bringing it up to the top.

Step 5: With the first piece, move onto the next piece of fabric and repeat the process. Continue to the center of the colors.

Step 6: Work from the other side, moving from the right to the center and it is essential to reverse the number 4.

Step 7: When the two fabrics meet in the middle, tie them together.

Step 8: Go onto the next row and repeat the same process.

Step 9: Work until you have finished your desired length.

Step 10: When you begin on a new one, all you need to do is to repeat the process in the same color order.

Step 11: Stitch the two together with a needle and thread. You can stitch yours so that they go opposite ways.

Step 12: Cut the ends off so that they hide into the first layer of color.

Step 13: Stitch the ends to the first layer so it is properly secure and cannot wiggle out. And finally you have your rug ready!

Which one will you choose to create? Please share your comments!
